Introduction
The golfer finds eighteen holes distributed over three miles of territory, or nine holes and half the distance. The holes are not equidistant. A match may be played by two or by four persons; but only two balls are used, and in a 'foursome' the partners play alternate strokes. When it has been added that the holes are 4¼ inches in diameter, and that the balls, which are made of very hard gutta-percha, have a circumference of about 5½ inches, enough will perhaps have been said on the subject of measurements.
The player starts out from the first or "home" hole with the object of placing his ball in each of the succeeding seventeen with fewer strokes of the golf stick than his opponent finds necessary.
Now it is obvious that in order to propel the ball over such a course as has been described, and to accomplish the round on an average of five strokes to each hole (which, though creditable, would not be an extraordinary good score), more than one species of implement is requisite. The ball may be lying beautifully on close-cropped turf, where you can get a good sweeping stroke at it, or it may, by reason of your bad play or bad luck, have landed in sand or in a wilderness of gorse, out of which you must force it as best you can. Again the surface of the turf is uneven, and a cuppy lie is apt to be a more troublesome thing than it looks to beginners.
These and many more technical difficulties, which may arise from circumstances over which the player has no control, necessitate the presence of ten different instruments, which look in illustration like abnormal dentist's tools. There are many other species of golf stick, advises us to restrict ourselves to these ten, which rejoice in the names of -- 1, driver; 2, long spoon; 3, short spoon; 4, brassy; 5, driving-iron; 6, lofting-iron; 7, mashy; 8, sleek ; 9, niblick ; 10, putter.
One of the attractive features of the game to the uninitiated are the tremendous and inspiring drives of two hundred yards and over that may be made by the skilled ones at certain stages of the game, the ball always being struck with the stick while the former lies on the ground. But the matter of "drives" introduces the only dangerous part of the game; a man may be knocked down or even killed by the hard gutta-percha ball, if his opponent carelessly attempts a long stroke.

Tips
Here are some simple rules to always keep in mind as you work to improve your game:
The Grip: The importance of placing the hands in the correct position on the golf club cannot be overexaggerated. There is no such thing as the perfect grip, but there are certain factors when holding the club in an orthodox way, that have proved to be succesful for the majority of players. It is important that a V is formed on the right hand by the thumb and lower section of the forefinger pointing between the chin and the right shoulder and only two knuckles are visible on the left hand to the player.
The Set Up: The relevance of achieving the correct set up fundamentals cannot be underestimated. Aim, ball postion, posture and weight distribution are all key elements in helping a player to hit the ball consistently and sucessfully towards the target. A good stance is important to a good swing. Spread your feet about as wide as your shoulders. Bend your knees slightly. Bend forward from the waist at your hips so that your arms are hanging down. Spread weight evenly on both feet.
The Swing: The swing can be described as a backward and upward movement of the clubhead, pulling the hands and arms around the body, and encouraging the shoulders to turn with a powerful rotation movement away from the target. Movement and energy are very important in a player's swing and therefore, weight transfer, leverage and release sum up the dynamic movement of the golf swing. At address the player prepares for the dynamic nature of the swing, the clubhead leads the hands into the backswing movement and the body begins to turn. The wrists are set and the upper body winds up against the lower body. At the top of the backswing the player’s shoulders are fully turned and the weight is correctly behind the ball. The lower body provides the power and leverage in the downswing. At impact, the hands, arms and body return to a dynamic position. The momentum of the swing pulls the player's body through. The full unwinding of the body is evident with the weight positioned solidly onto the left side.
Bunker Shots Bunker play is just one area of the short game. It can be greatly assisted by using bunker equipment, such as a sand iron which has a bounce sole on its underside preventing it from digging deeply into the sand, a unique feature which the other irons do not have. Shown below is the Standard or Splash Shot which is a relatively easy shot to play. The ball is opposite the left heel, the feet shuffled into the sand, the stance solid. The club face aims to the flagstick. The open stance and wrist action set the club steeply during the backswing. The shaft points parallel to the body alignment.
Have fun In the end -it's just a game Have fun!
