Netiquettes

NETiquettes - A combination of NET and Etiquette, basically means to watch your manners and like everywhere else in the world be pleasant and the world will be pleasant back to you. Remember this and you should pretty much be guaranteed that whenever you need help, someone will be there.

Here are a few guidelines designed to help you feel at home in the cyber world. Most of these are applied when you are using e-mails or participating in discussion groups.

  • Always try to relax and stay cool even in the middle of a heated discussion. Often one will misread another's meaning in a message, and take it as criticism or sarcasm.

  • Try to use a meaningful subject heading, so that people can immediately see if your message deals with a topic that interests them.

  • Try to avoid accumulating subject headings like "RE: reply: re: Reply: what's up? - Forwarded - Reply (FWD)."

  • Do not send mails in all caps. The use of capital letters might show that you are shouting or maybe irritated. Use mixed case while writing.

  • If you are wondering how to do something, then more then likely someone else is wondering the same thing. That is why it is common to get responses like, "If you find out the answer let me know!" when you post a question.

  • Most of the people who are not very familiar with the net have the impression that the net world, especially chat rooms are full of people who are absolutely jobless and out to fool you. Well it is not this way. So you need to respect the identity and credibility of the other person on the net.

  • Always write a subject heading especially if it is an official mail. This would give the recipient an idea of the content of the message. People who receive a lot of mail, sometimes, use subject heading for sorting the mails as a time saving exercise. Don't post one-sentence comments like "Yep" or "I can't make it".

  • Show your emotions online by using emoticons. Here are the few most popular emoticons on the net. :-) happy , :) smile , :-( sad , ;-) wink , :-o shocked/ surprised , :-> devilish , :/ hmmm... , :)) laughing , :(( crying , :D grinning , :P teasing.

  • On chat, while sending quick messages many acronyms are used. Here are a few but remember- don't overuse! 2L8 - too late, AAMOF - as a matter of fact, ASAP - As soon as possible, ASAIK - As far as I know, AFAIK - as far as I know, B4N - bye for now, BTW - by the way, CMIIW - correct me if I'm wrong, CUL - see you later, FWIW - for what it's worth, FYI - For your information, FAQ - frequently asked questions, IAC - in any case, IKWUM - I know what you mean, IMO - In my opinion, IMHO - in my humble opinion, IOW - in other words, KWIM - know what I mean, LOL - laughing out loud, NBIF - no basis in fact, OTOH - on the other hand, Re - regarding, ROTFL- rolling on the floor laughing, RTFM- read the manual, SIG - special interest group, TIA - thanks in advance, TNX - thanks, TTFN - ta ta for now, WRT - with regard to.

    The Internet had surely made the world a very small place to be. One feels more connected to people who are living miles away. People from different walks of life, religions, nationalities, genders come together to form an entirely different culture. But then, here in this internet world too, one needs to follow certain norms--usually known as Netiquette. These are the set of rules for acceptable behaviour online. Netiquettes are not elaborate or something one has to learn, basically they are common courtesies. One may get used to these netiquettes once you join this culture. But it is always advisable to know it before hand.
