Shrek
If you are as bored as most of us are of the obligatory summer see this film, as it whips the cream from its ever-zealous American 'planet-saving' compatriots. Shrek was the first animation feature since Peter Pan 50 years ago to be entered into competition at Cannes, which is not surprising considering its revolutionary "fluid animation system" that produces photo-realism sure to leave you gob-smacked. Based on the William Steig's children's book, Shrek takes every classic fairytale conception and turns it on its head - no-one is what they seem, from Mike Myers comical 'evil ogre' Shrek, whose monstrous personal habits would make Disney blush (or such is the intention) to the 'beautiful damsel in distress' princess (feistily voiced by the well-cast Cameron Diaz). The devilish tale is sparked off when Shrek's precious solitude is threatened and he sets out to reclaim his anonymity reluctantly flanked by an incessantly talking sidekick - the Donkey (hilariously voiced by Eddie Murphy who steals the show) and pitted against the 'evil' if somewhat 'short-changed' Lord Farquaad (voiced with delicious range by John Lithgow). A must see for this summer!
